When you find yourself texting hilarious lines from a book to your bookish friends, there’s no doubt it’s a good book. Royals by Rachel Hawkins totally fits the bill.
The story is told by Daisy, younger sister of the British/American girl who is dating the Prince of Scotland (that’s a thing in this book). She swans through her meeting with the royal family with sassy sarcasm, even while meeting a bunch of super-cute posh boys (the prince’s younger brother and his friends, a.k.a. “The Royal Wreckers”) and keeping herself out of the tabloids as best she can.
Some of the reasons it ticked a bunch of my diversion boxes:
- A witty, sarcastic heroine (“And suddenly we’re riding horses in the park like people who just fell in love in a tampon commercial.”)
- Delightful descriptions of Daisy’s take on posh events she has to attend
- A Mr. Darcy-style potential love interest
- A tongue-in-cheek look at royal families / royal life (“It’s this lifting of his chin and tightening of his jaw that makes him look like he’s about to oppress peasants.”)
This book is not going to change the world. It’s not very deep or full of life lessons. But it is a lovely, fun distraction, which was just what I needed for a minute. And I can’t wait to read book 2 in the series.
